When I first considered painting this scene, I was unsure whether or not to include the broken limb in the water. However, the more I studied it, the more I felt that the limb was actually critical to its success as a finished painting. The subtle, twisted shapes rising in and out of the water add some movement and interest to the large body of water, while providing some scale when viewing the overall composition.
