I wanted to add more interest to the painting by creating drama in the sky. Since I used an abundance of cool blues and violets in painting the bird, I decided that grasses tinged with orange and clouds filled with yellow might allow complements to work for me. The goal I worked toward in the background was a late-day sky with strong, soft hues accentuating the piece. Toward the finish, I strengthened the turquoise blue in the sky and reflected water. This was the subtle warm balance I needed to add considering the overall cool blue hues in the painting.
